What facilities are inspected by the Environmental Health staff in the county?

Environmental Health staff inspects food establishments, food carts, food trucks, public swimming pools, tattoo establishments, nursing homes and day care centers.


What type of food service is regulated by the health department?

The health department regulates any establishment that prepares or serves food or drink as well as establishments that prepare and sell meat and poultry.


Where do I find out a restaurant's inspection score in the restaurant?

A food establishment’s inspection score is to be placed in a prominent place in the facility.

What is SERVSAFE?

SERVSAFE is one of several food safety training programs offered to food industry workers.  The SERVSAFE course highlights and explains safe food handling practices, such as instruction on storing, preparing and serving food safely.  Other topics discussed include food-borne illness risk factors, proper methods of cleaning and sanitizing and personal hygiene requirements.


Why are some eating establishments not inspected quarterly?

Food establishments are assigned a risk category based on the type of food and the amount of preparation conducted there. Some establishments will be inspected quarterly while others will only be inspected twice or three times a year. Establishments with more complex menus and preparation procedures have a higher risk and, therefore, require more frequent inspections.


Where do I file a complaint about a restaurant and/or possible food borne illness?

Contact the Environmental Health office at 704-986-3675. You will need to provide details about the complaint, so the Environmental Health staff can conduct a thorough investigation. If you believe you became ill from eating at a restaurant, you will need to provide details on the symptoms and when these symptoms started.


How do I make a complaint or get information about rats, mosquitoes and/or ticks?

Call the Environmental Health office at 704-986-3675. Be prepared to give details on the complaint.


Sewage is backing up in the backyard. Who do I call?

Call the Environmental Health office at 704-986-3675. You will be asked questions such as when and how long the failure has been occurring, water use habits, etc.  A permit to repair the septic tank system must be issued before any work can be done.


How often are community pools inspected?

Environmental Health staff inspects and permits each of the public pools at the beginning of the swimming season.  They are inspected again at least once during the swimming season.


I'm concerned about lead in the home I rent. What do I do about this?

Lead paint test kits can be purchased at many local building supply stores.  The health department can conduct a lead investigation if a child under the age of six (6) has an elevated blood lead level.
