A Pediatric Dentist is on staff with the Stanly County Dental Clinic. What is a Pediatric Dentist?

A Pediatric Dentist is a dentist who specializes in providing oral health care and treatment to infants, children, teens and children and special need children.

A Pediatric Dentist has completed four years of dental school and two additional years of residency concentrating on the oral health needs of infants, children, teens and children and special need children.


Are adults eligible to receive dental services at the health department's dental clinic?

No, the Stanly County Dental Clinic only serves children – birth through 18 years of age.


Why are only children served at the Stanly County Dental Clinic?

The dental clinic was set up to serve only children by the Stanly County Board of Health.


Are children with dental insurance served at the Stanly County Dental Clinic?

Yes, the dental clinic accepts private insurance along with Medicaid and Health Choice.

At what age should I take my child for the first visit with a dentist?

Your child should be seen by a dentist by his/her first birthday.


Should young children use fluoridated toothpaste?

Yes, they should, but it should only be a smear layer [less than a pea-sized amount.]  Parents should place the toothpaste on the brush for their children.


How long do I need to help my children brush their teeth?

Young children don’t have the hand-eye coordination to brush their teeth appropriately.  Children should be helped to brush their teeth and floss until they can tie their own shoes – around seven (7) or eight (8) years old.
